Use url shortner and earn money

What is a shortener for URLs?

What is a shortener for URLs? How to use a URL shortener, when to use one, and why you should use one.

It's a fair question…

As a company that shortens URLs and specializes in everything to do with links, we get this question a lot.

So we thought we'd tell you everything there is to know about this industry that is secretly changing. Find out how you can make the most of a link shortener.

What is a shortener for URLs?

A URL shortener is a simple tool that lets you turn a long URL into any shorter URL you want.

Nothing could be easier than that.

I want to make sure that you understand that a URL shortener is the same as a link shortener... is the same thing as a link reducer... a link shortener, a URL shortener, or a vanity URL maker. I think that takes care of them all. They all mean the same thing, which is that we want to take something long and ugly and make it short and cute. To keep things simple, I'll just use the word "URL shortener" from now on until I die.

What is a Shortener for Custom URLs?

When you connect your own custom domain to a URL shortener, it becomes the base for all the short links you make. This is also called a branded URL shortener. You can choose your own domain instead of using something like bit.ly or rebrand.ly.

This gif tells you everything you need to know:

We always suggest using your own custom domain when sharing links online. This makes people more likely to trust the links, learn about your brand, and click on them.

Check out the video below to learn more about the difference between branded and generic short links:

Shortening URLs: A Brief History

Links have been the way to get from one place on the internet to another since the beginning. Think about it: you either search for something and then click a link, or you type a link directly into the address bar of your browser. There's nothing else you can do.

You can share links directly, embed them in "anchor text" like this, or use a custom link shortener to make your links look cool and branded like this:

With the rise of Twitter and other social sharing sites, URLs that were too long started to be a problem. When messages were limited to 140 characters, Twitter used to count all of the characters in a link. (Now, it counts every link as 23 characters.) This meant that you could share a URL like:

Would gobble up the whole Tweet... Unless you shortened the URL.

Twitter used to use TinyURL as its URL shortener of choice, but in November 2009, it switched to Bitly.

Then Twitter came out with its own URL Shortener, which is called t.co. Designed to protect users from dangerous links and make long URLs shorter.

Google did the same thing by launching goo.gl in December 2009. Since then, dozens of other URL shorteners have come out, each with different features and ways to make money. (However, it's important to note that Google said earlier this year that it would be ending its service.)

But besides the fact that URL shorteners were necessary for Twitter "back in the day," what can they do for you now?

What Can a Shortener for URLs Do?

Here are a few cool things you can do right now with your URL shortener:

Link Masking

You can hide the original web address when you shorten a URL.

This is bad for us as consumers because it lets spammers and hackers hide links that are harmful to us. Thanks to Chrome and other browsers' (you use Chrome, right?) security features, you don't have to worry. We don't have to worry about malicious link masking anymore.

A good example of link masking is taking a URL from a strong piece of content you want to share and shortening it to show a key point in your social message. For instance:

The original link is https://blog.bufferapp.com/the-top-100-social-media-blogs. It's not a bad link, but Twitter won't show it.

So, I made a short link to say the same thing in less space and hide the fact that it came from Buffer. I'm not hiding it because I want to hurt you. In fact, I share a lot of other Tweets that talk about them and

Some other good reasons to hide a link could be:

And don't confuse link masking with link cloaking, which is when you give search engines, called spiders or bots, false information while sending people to a different URL that has nothing to do with the fake content. This is a bad SEO technique that could get your site removed from Google's search results. Don't do it.

Link Shortening

It is much easier to share a short URL that is easy to remember than a long one, especially if the long URL has random numbers in it.

Which URL are you going to shout out to a room full of people while giving a talk? Which one is short or long?

In your presentation, you would link to which URL?

Which URL would you want to tell people when you ran out of business cards at a networking event? Derric.link/card is what I use. It's really that easy.

Which URL should you put in a forum when you want to share a new idea?

When you share a link in public, you should use a link shortening tool to make the link look nicer and keep track of how many people click on it.

Link Following

The most important reason to shorten a link has to be so that you can track it. We need to know the results of our work as digital marketers and social media managers...

We may also have to report on our efforts every month.

If we can't show proof of our clicks and, hopefully, sales, we don't have much job security.

Our sister company ClickMeter has the best technology to track links from click to conversion. (Yes, I'm biased, but I still haven't seen anything this good. However, Rebrandly is releasing some cool new analytics features this summer).

You can see how many real people and how many bots or spiders clicked on a link. This gives you a better idea of how many real people visit your site and how many of them buy something. You can get a breakdown by day or even by country (not shown). There are also a lot of other cool things to check out.

Not everyone needs ClickMeter, though. It's more for digital marketers or social media managers who run a lot of campaigns and want to keep a close eye on them.

But simple link tracking is a very important part of all marketing, whether it's for a business or for yourself... For fun or to make money... Because of this, TinyURL isn't really useful any more. Rebrandly is, of course, the best URL shortening service.

Link Retargeting

Do you know what retargeting is?

It's why you see Amazon ads as soon as you look at a product on the site.

Retargeting is basically adding a small pixel, or piece of code, to your site so that when people visit, you can show them ads later.

Marketers and advertisers make a lot of money from it, and I often call it the "lowest hanging fruit" for any business.

Now, people don't even have to go to your website to get this pixel; they just have to click on a link. This is called "retargeting" a link.

Retargeting links can help you reach people outside of the "awareness" stage of the marketing funnel and into the "pre-awareness" stage, which helps you better target your online ads.

You can add retargeting pixels to your links and reach more people in places like Facebook, Google AdWords, and Twitter by using a tool like Rebrandly or ClickMeter.

Link Rotating

Have you ever wanted to do an A/B test but didn't know how?

With advanced linking features, you can actually split traffic 50/50, or 75/25, or whatever you want, right from the link itself and do a simple landing page test. Now, this isn't necessary for advertising because you can just run two ads, and there are other tools, like Optimizely, that let you do this on the page instead of in the link, but there are some ways to test split traffic for your links.

You could also run a contest where the first click goes to the "winner" page and the rest go to the "try again" page.
